REPRESENTATION OF CLASS - MONARCH OF GLEN

At the start of the clip we are should some builders loading up the van with some tools and talking about what work they are going to be doing at work. This could suggest that these men are working class as they are working in a typical industrial type job.

Next we are introduced to a young male sweeping the floor outside and a young female. We know by the accents that these people are Scottish. We are then shown the young female who claims she can drive when in fact she crashes straight into another car which we find out is her headmaster and she is only 16 years old. We are then introduced to Edward Green the young girls (Amy) headmaster. Edward sounds vary fluent and posh when he talks and also is dressed very smartly which could suggest that he is middle/upper class. We know that Paul is the boss of the characters as he is the person giving out the orders to people, also Paul has an English accent whereas all the others have a Scottish accent. This could show that he is different to the rest and makes him sound intelligent. The young male and Paul both look and sound shocked when they find out that Amy is still at school and is only 16, this would tell us that Amy has been lying to them and could come across as mischievous which could emphasis her working class.

After being introduced to Edward Green, Paul takes him into a very posh wooden board room which would be similar to an old gentlemen’s room or an old fashion study. The way they are talking with each other is like they are from the same class which could show us that Paul is also upper class. They pour a glass of brandy out of a decanter which is very posh and shows Pauls class. The camera angles have been very clever in this clip as it is showing Paul and Edward both on the same level not having one looking down at the other. This really emphasises that both Paul and Edward are upper class and come across to have the status of rich.

Towards the end of the clip the sound in the background is very happy and positive when the men and female are moving tables and chairs around. However continuing onto Amy the music starts to get very sad and emotion which links in to how Amy is feeling about having to go home and back to school.

COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS

Class and Status - Working Class - Robson Green - Waterloo Road

Robson Green played the caretaker in the last series of waterloo road. Waterloo Road is a programme about a high school in a fairly rough run down area. There are a lot of problems at the school which always ends in the police being there or government trying to close down the school. Robson plays the caretaker at the school thought out the series. This would determine Robson into working class as he is working in an industrial maintenance job. Here is a good clip showing Robson cleaning spraypaint of the walls in the school. At the start of this clip we see him scrubbing the spraypaint off the walls. This tells us that his job isint very high up in the industry and he is working class. Also Robson is wearing a shirt which a caretaker would'nt normally wear, they would normally be in overalls or clothes that could get ruined. As we hear Robson speaking in the clip we discover that infact he talks fairly posh and not slangy, this could link with why he dresses smartly for the job he is doing. So overall we could say that he has middle/upper title but a working class status because of the job and the little wage he would be earning.

Class and Status - Poor - Joseph Gilgun (Rudy) - Misfits

Joesph Gilgun plays Rudy in the TV drama 'Misfits'. Misfits is about a group of young adults who are serving community service and the local communal centre. The young adults are aged around 18 to 25. They all have some sort of special power. We dont really know much about all the chacters backgrounds so it is had to find a partically poor character. We get the impression that Rudy is poor because in the latest episode which i cant find clips for we see Rudy struggle to find places to live and has to barge his way into one of the other boys in the comuntity centres flat. Also we never see Rudy get in contact with any friends of family which shows us that noone is there to supposrt him and he is living quite individually. Rudy is serving community service which is usally because you have done something wrong or commited a crime. This could be down to him being unhappy and poor wanting to commit a crime. We dont see Rudy with a job or any source of money coming in. The clothes he wears arent very expensive looking and look a bit tatty and old. Rudy has lots of tattoos all on his body which is usally sterotype as thugist or not very well presentable. All these reason give me the impression that Rudy is quite a poor character.

CLASS AND STATUS

Wednesday 31 October 2012

CLASS/STATUS

Class and Status are basically the wealth of someone. Each one is split into two binary opposites. Class is Middle/working class and status is rich/poor. RICH
1) Kirk Norcross – in the programme TOWIE kirk is represented as having a lot of money, his dad owns a nightclub and they have a huge house.
2) J.R.Ewing – he owns an oil field
3) Mr Burns – the character in the Simpson’s is very rich because he owns a nuclear plant and has a personal assistant.
4) Ricci – this character is in the TV series Geordie shore. When he goes home in series three we are shown his car and house. He owns a range rover sport and a very big modern house, this shows his wealth clearly.
5)
POOR
1) Effy – of skins effy and tony are two characters which could be seen to be poor, this is because the house is in a council estate.
2) Lester Burnham from American Beauty would be an example of working class. He is employed and has an average size house
3) Kevin Webster from Coronation Street would be working class as he works in a garage on an average wage.
4) Billy from Eastenders would also be working class as he is employed on a wage working for other people in all different types of work.
5) Jason Grimshaw from Coronation Street works as a builder which would make him working class.

EDITING

Continuity –The viewer should not notice the cuts, and shots should flow together naturally. Hence, the sequence of shots should appear to be continuous.

In this clip we see a fight scene from the film 'Fast Five'. The auidence shouldnt beable to see the cuts in this clip and it should look to us that it's all one clip rather than being split up into seperate shots.

Hollywood Montage - a "montage sequence" is a short segment in a film in which narrative information is presented in a condensed fashion.
This is a montage clip from the film 'Stepbrothers'. This shows what is happening over a long period of time in just a few minutes.

Cross Cutting/parallel editing - Editing that alternates shots of two or more lines of action occurring in different places, usually simultaneously.
I found it hard to find a clip from a film so just used this clip but this is an example of Cross Cutting/Parallel editing.

Dissolve - A transition between two shots during which the first image gradually disappears while the second image gradually appears.
This clip shows all different types of dissolve transition in films

THE SEVEN AREAS OF REPRESENTATION (COMMON STEREOTYPES)

REPRESENTATIONS – COMMON STEREOTYPES

SOUND - RATCATCHER CLIP 10

In this task we watched clip 10 from the film 'Ratcatcher'. At the start of this clip we are shown a young child wrapping himself around a curtain numerous times. This is an abstract image. The sounds we hear in the background are what seem to be other children in a big group playing around laughing and joking. Because the child is wrapping himself up we believe that he is trying to hide from something or someone and is upset. The atmosphere at the start of this clip is quite strange because you would think the child would be outside playing with all the other kids. We soon realise this child is in fact a young boy called Ryan when his mum slapped him to stop messing with the curtains. When Ryan gets out of the curtain the non-diegetic sound stops and we are then introduced to the real world sounds. This could show us that Ryan has been woken up from his dream.

Ryan and his mum are sitting down in a room and his mum makes him tuck his trousers into his wellington boots. They walk down the street and Ryan sneakily turns around and runs away from his mum. This shows us that Ryan is a bit of a naughty boy and doesn’t respect his mum that much. We are then shown Ryan taking his trouser back out his wellingtons disobeying his mum. When this happens we are introduced to some slow music which could show us that something bad is going to happen.

He runs outside to his friend James who is playing by the river. They start playing and messing around in the water. At this time we also have his mum who is shoes shopping who we assume the shoes are for Ryan. We have two scenes where they have the same sounds this is called parallel sound. The boys start to get out of hand and there is no adult there to stop this. James pushes Ryan a little too hard into the water and Ryan goes under. We then see James running off and a shot of bubble floating to the surface where Ryan was. We instantly assume that he is going to drown as the music change and it becomes tense and serious.

SOUND - SUNSHINE CLIP 12

In this task we watched clip 12 from the film ‘Sunshine’. At the start of the clip we see strange pieces of what it is like in space, with a man falling through space. Also in this clip we see a man running out of a pit room in the spaceship all out of breath and looking angry, this man looks fairly untidy with long hair and stubbly beard. We see a bloody handprint on the wall which could show us that something bad has happened and why the man is acting like this.

The sounds we hear at the start of the clip are quite strange for example we have short snippets of whale sounds which don’t really link in with what we see. This could show that no one knows what is actually going on up there in space.

Throughout the clip we have very loud, overwhelming, powerful, fast music playing which can add to the atmosphere and keeps the audience interested and connected. This type of music also ups the tempo of the clip to go with what we see.

Sunday 14 October 2012

EXAMPLES OF SOUND

This is a clip from the popular TV series and movie 'The Inbetweeners'. This clip shows Diegetic sound as the audience and characters can hear the sound. In this clip from the film 'Mission Impossible' we have the character Ethan Hunt climbing up a rock face. The sound in the background is non-diegetic as the audience can here it but the character can't. This is a clip from a very popular film called 'Taken' which they have recently just released the 2nd film. In this clip we have synchronous sound because the actor talking lips are in time with the speaking we hear. Asynchronous sound is just the opposite where the person talking lips are out of time with the words we hear.

SKINS ANALYSIS

In this tasks were watched the first 5 minutes of the first ever serious of the TV show ‘Skins’. In this short clip we are introduced to four characters Tony, Effie, Mum and Dad. Tony is the main character who we focus on. First thing I’m going to point out is the theme tune/opening tune. This programme is aimed at teenagers and is made by teenagers. You would think that they would just pick a well known chart song for the theme tune but they haven’t. They have made there own theme tune which is unique and catchy. People will here this theme tune and automatically think of skins rather than having a popular chart song which wouldn’t stand out. The theme tuned picked is very upbeat and catchy it suits teenagers perfectly.

The start of the clip we are shown Tony (teenage boy) lying in bed. The way he is laying in the bed in-between a naked man and naked women printed on his duvet cover could show that he is confused about his sexuality. Also the duvet cover is immaculately tidy like as if no one is even in the bed. This may link to his age as many young teenagers are confused on there sexuality. Then we are shown his alarm going of and a montage of Tony doing his daily morning work out with some electronic music typically known as teenage music. This would attract the teenage audience to watch the episode and represents the age of the audience. Once Tony has finished his workout he tenses up his muscles in the mirror and smiles. People may suggest that he thinks he is full of himself which stereotypes most teenaged boys to do them sort of think after a work out, which then represents age. Now we are showed Tony pulling various pranks on his Dad who seems like he is a very short temper and angry person. Teenagers are typically stereotype to be annoying towards the older generation of people which also represents the age of Tony and his Dad. Another representation of age on Tony is quite the opposite of his age. His rug is very old fashioned which we wouldn’t expect a teenager of his age to have. Also his clothes and style is the opposite to what teenagers are stereotyped to wear. He wears baggy chinos, V-necked plain t-shirts and a plain sweater which aren’t what you would expect him to wear. How his clothes and room is laid out is so perfect like it’s a shop which also teenagers aren’t expected to be like this. The represents the old age.

We are now introduced to Tony’s younger sister Effie. We are shown a long shot of her walking towards the house. Effie is wear a mini shirt and a short top, here make up is all smudged and her hair is very messy. We assume that she has been out all night partying like what a typical teenager is stereotyped to do. This is a representation of a teenager. Tony has helped Effie to sneak into the house without the parents knowing. When she is in the house she quickly gets changed into her school uniform and cleans herself up.  When Effie comes downstairs she looks a lot younger than when she entered the house. This can show us that she has a split personality, also she can be seen as being very sneaky and manipulative towards her parents as they don’t have a clue where she has been all night.

Just at the end of the clip we are shown Tony and his Dad. Tony plays lots of tricks on his Dad which makes him get frustrated. Dad is very foul mouthed which attracts the teenage audience as it is very humorous. Throughout the scene we are shown a representation of the Dad not acting his own age.

SOUND - HUNGER CLIP 9

Activity 1 - The first task for us was to listen to the sounds that you hear in the clip and write about them. The sounds in the clip were very harsh and loud. Here are the sounds that I heard in the clip: Birds, breathing, doors opening and closing, foot steps, singing on bus, chairs moving, keys jangling, children laughing, silence and metallic (scraping, banging). All these sounds make us think about how strange the clip is and quite deep and confusing. There is barely any if any speaking in the clip which makes it extremely hard for us to connect to the clip and find it interesting.

Activity 2 – Now we are asked to write about the silence in the clip. When there is silence we are generally shown close up shots of the Bobby Sands dying. This is very disrupting and hard to watch. I think the reason why the camera focuses on the dying man when it is silence is to show us about his life and just before he is going to die he is in a heavenly place. We are told that this man has starved himself in prison to prove a point. This makes us think about the character and his emotions. The man is so weak he is unable to stand up. We are also shown in this clip the man blinking and you can hear him blinking which adds to the strange, weird, disturbing effect on the clip.

Activity 3 – In this activity we are asked to show how the main two keys sounds birds and breathing relate to the story. Firstly the heavy breathing of Bobby shows us that he is really struggle with life and his painful death. The breathing gives us a stronger feeling about him dying and makes us feel that Bobby is in pain. At the end of the clip we are shown Bobby as a child running through the woods. It starts to get dark and Bobby turns around, looks back and then carries on running. This is foreshadowing what is happening in his last few days of life. He has realised his life is up and he is not backing out, he is going to dye but he just has to get on with it and carry on like carrying on running instead of turning back. As Bobby carries on running we are shown lots of birds fly out of the trees and up into the sky. This could show that he has had a good life and now is going up to heaven. When he is running through the woods his breathing is also very loud and heavy which links in with him now breathing heavily, struggling before he dies.

Activity 4 – This activity we are asked to study the flashback at the end of the clip when music is introduced. The music played seems to be really disturbing and loud. As I listen to it more closely it could be resembled as funeral type, depressing, and sad music. It sounds as if it played by a horn or pipes which links to him dying and having funeral type music played.

Conclusion – The filmmaker using silence very well, it makes us concentrate more on what is filmed which is Bobby Sand’s dying. When something is died it is completely silent and peaceful this is why the filmmaker has used silence and breathing to really emphasis the death. The Loud, harsh sounds that the filmmaker used would show the pain and struggle Bobby has been through in his life but now he is put to rest is peace.

'AMERICAN BEAUTY' SCENE 1 AND 2 ANALYSIS

In this task we were asked to watch scene one and two from the film 'American Beauty' and the write about it. The main character in the film who we study is Lester Burnham a father and husband. The film was directed by Sam Mendes starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari, Chris Copper.

Scene 1 - At the start of this scene it shows us a bird’s eye view of Lester lying face down in bed, the above shot makes him look small and unimportant. His wife is out of bed and the whole room is white and beige which are colours that are classed as dull and boring, this gives us the impression that his personality and life is dull and boring just like the colours of his bedroom. Then we are showed a shot of Lester getting out of his bed and his slippers are already in the perfect position to slide straight onto his feet, this shows us that Lester is a man of routine. After this we are shown a shot of Lester masturbating in the shower and his voiceover says 'this will be the highpoint of me day'. This can shows us that his sex life with his wife isn’t very good and it makes us think that he is a lonely person. The shoot is filmed so that the glass of the shower makes Lester look trapped, we get this a lot in this film. The next shoot we have Lester’s wife outside gardening and talking happily with the next door neighbour and there is Lester hiding behind the window watching his wife and neighbours, this makes us think that he is an unsociable, lonely character. This shoot is also filmed so that it looks like Lester is trapped behind the window. There seems to be no emotions on Lester’s face and it seems like he is very distant from his family. Throughout the hole film the colour scheme is either white and beige (dull and boring) or red, white and blue which represents the American flag. Towards the end of scene 1 we see that Lester’s wife gives him very little respect neither does his teenage daughter. Lester sits in the back of the car asleep and his wife driving with his daughter in the passenger seat. This makes us compare him to a child about how he behaves and how he is treated. Throughout the whole scene we have a negative voiceover from Lester but right at the end he says ‘it’s never too late’. This shows that there is some positivity in Lester’s life.

Scene 2 – At the start of scene 2 its shows Lester sitting at his desk at work on the phone. His general mood seems quite happy or maybe sarcastic when he is on the phone to a customer. Also it shows Lester’s computer screen and his reflection on the screen which is another point of where it shows that he is trapped. Then Lester’s boss calls him to his office and talks to him. How Lester is position makes him look small and powerless and how the boss is position makes him look big and has all the power. The whole conversation seems to be tense and we start to see Lester’s anger come out of him when the boss is talking about firing people. Then it shows Lester being drove home from work by his wife and they are talking about what Lester’s boss said to him, Lester seems very angry and frustrated about this. The two of them walk inside and then we are showed Lester, his wife and daughter all eating round the dinner table. His daughter describes the music played as ‘elevator music’. This type of music matches the mood between Lester and his daughter (Jayne) as they haven’t been speaking. The whole misc en scene shows the colour scheme red, white and blue and it shows candles light on the table like it’s a special occasion. The family are so far spread apart which shows us that this is what they are like in really life, distant. Lester is sat all slouched like a child and his wife has correct posture like someone of her age would have. Jayne ends up stomping out of the room into the kitchen as she has an argument with Lester. Lester follows her into the kitchen and they talk, he apologises for not being there for her and being a good father figure. This shows us that he is a genuine warm hearted man but he isn’t acting like it. Right at the end of the scene we are showed a man filming Jayne and Lester from outside the window. This man doesn’t look trustworthy and it just adds to our thoughts of what is going to happen next.

'RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES' CASE STUDY

In this task we were asked to pick a film and research about it. The film I have picked is ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ because I have never seen it but heard that it is a very good film. ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ is a 2011 American science fiction film directed by Rupert Wyatt and starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis. Written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. It was released on August 5, 2011. It has a running time of 105 minutes and is rated 12A. The film was nominated for an Academy award for best visual effects. It was also nominated for five Satum awards including Best Director for Wyatt and Best Writing for Jaffa and Silver. It is estimated that the film had a budget of $93,000,000. This film was a co-production between 20th Century Fox, Cherninentertainment and Dur entertainment. It was only produced in the English language but also has sign languages and sub-titles. The main location for filming was in Louisiana, USA.

Here is a brief summary of the storyline in 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'.

The main chimpanzee at the story's heart is Caesar (Actor Andy Serkis), Caesar gains human-like intelligence and emotions from an experimental drug. Raised like a child by the drug's creator, Will Rodman (James Franco) and a primatologist Caroline Aranha (Frieda Pinto), Caesar ultimately finds himself taken from the humans he loves and imprisoned in an ape sanctuary in San Bruno. Seeking justice for his fellow inmates, Caesar gives the fellow apes the same drug that he inherited. He then assemble a simian army and escapes the sanctuary. Putting man and ape on a collision course that could change the planet forever. Here is the trailer released for this film.

THE FILM INDUSTRY

In the American film industry there are six main film studios, these are: Warner Brothers (owned by Time Warner), Paramount (owned by Viacom), 20th Century Fox (owned by News Corp), Walt Disney Pictures (owned by The Walt Disney Company), Columbia Pictures (owned by Song Corporation) and Universal Pictures (owned by GE). These six studios dominate the film industry and it is hard for less recognised film studios to produce successful films. These big 6 studios produce better films than other film companies as they have more money and are more recognised so they can take more risks. Each off these studios are owned by a conglomerate which is a huge media company that owns lots of other smaller companies known as subsidiaries (smaller arms connected to the conglomerate). When the market is dominated by just a few companies this is known as Oligopoly. The film industry in UK is totally different to America. There are very few big studios which means they cant take as many risks as American film studios do, due to budgets etc. Most of the time UK film studios can't afford to make the film a success so they tend to join with one of the big 6 studios to get there film to be successful. America own 75% of the UK box office. Here are the main British film studios: Big Talk Pictures (produced Paul, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), Working Title Films (produced Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Boat that Rocked, About a Boy), Film4 (owned by television company Channel 4 produced This is England, Fever Pitch), BBC films (owned by the BBC produced The boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Miss Potter), Ecosse Films (produced Mrs Brown, Charlotte grey, Nowhere Boy) and UK Film Council (owned by the Government funded by the lottery and government produced The Women in Black, Kidulthood, Adulthood, We need to talk to Kevin).

Key Words:
  • Convergence - Two or more types of media coming together.
  • Synergy - Different elements of a company working together to promote related products.
  • Concentration of media ownership - The process by which an increasingly smaller number of companies own the majority of media outlets.
  • Conglomerate - The company that owns a range of smaller companies.
  • Subsidiary - Smaller arms that come from a bigger company.
  • Oligopoly - When the market is dominated by a small number of companies.
  • Cross media ownership - When a company owns lots off different types of media.

THE GAZE

In this image we get Freddie Ljungberg modelling a pair of black Calvin Klein boxer shorts. The reason why Calvin Klein have picked Freddie to model there underwear is because he comes across as being a very musclely good looking man. Younger males will see this image and want to buy these boxers to make themselfs look like Freddie Ljungberg. This image will appeal to young men, gay men and also women will want there partners/boyfriends to were Calvin Klein underwear to look like Freddie but actually this is just a fantasy. Freddie is holding onto a bar above his head which is making himself flex up his bicep muscle. His hand is going down his boxer shorts and his hand is in a tensed fist position which is showing his arm muscles, he is also sweaty which may show that he has just had sex.

In this image we have Eva Mendes modelling for Calvin Klein women’s wear. Calvin Klein has obviously picked Eva to advertise this brand because she has a cracking figure and a nature photo genic talent. In this Image Eva is looking all hot and sweaty which could indict that she has just had sex which for some people which seem that her outfit is very sexy, this will persuaded them to buy Calvin Klein products. Men will want their partners/girlfriends to wear these products and also women will buy this product to look like Eva Mendes but actually this is another fantasy. Also Eva Mendes is a famous American actress which people will idol to be and dress like her.

REPRESENTATION OF THREE IMAGES

In our media class today Mrs Ford set us a task to represent and give our thoughts and opinons of these three pictures.

The First photo we were showed today is this one of a man standing in a busy street smoking. My first impression of this man is that he is a tramp and most likly homeless. The reason why i think this is because of his patched trousers, wolly beanie and to small cardigan. My all round opinion of this man is that he is a scuffy, homeless old man who maybe once was employed then lost his life.

After the task set Mr Ford revealed that infact this man is Doug Bihlmaier who is the head designer at the huge clothing company Ralph Lauren. Mr Ford pointed out to us that infact his trousers were perfectly sitched and not dirty atall, his cardigan and hat didnt appaer to have any holes in and his shoes were designer and worth over £200. So this just shows us that how he has decided to dress is very stylish and unique but comes across as trampish and scuffy.

The second picture that we were shown is a young looking business man. He seems to look very smart and clean. Having no facial hair makes him look presentable and looks like he looks after himself. Also this man looks like his is some kind of important business and he looks very genuine and a trustworthy man.

However when we studied this man in more detail and Mr Ford told us a bit more about him i was totally shocked. This man is infact a mass serial killer named Ted Bundy. He has actually killed over 100 innocent people and he has now been executed for his horrible crimes. Ted used his innocent, trustworthy appearence to fool people to come with him before he killed them.

Finally our class was shown this photo off this women. Instantly i noticed how weirdly and bright this women is dressed. She had alot of different coloured clothes on which most people wounldnt wear ever. Also the enviroment were she was looks very desserted and empty which makes here look even more out off place and odd.

After we studied this women and was told that in actually fact her name was Anna Piaggi and she was an itailian fashion designer for vogue. Unfortunetly she recently died of old age but this women was very good friends with the most famous fashion designers e.g vivvian westwood.

This task has shown me that when people judge people on what they look like and what they dress like tyhey could be completly wrong. It shows that people sterotype what people look like instanly when they see them when they can be totally wrong. I was very shocked about all these people and who they actually are and i have found this task very interesting.
